What is a Transfer Station?

A Waste Transfer Station is a facility where non-hazardous municipal solid waste (MSW) and recycling is unloaded from collection vehicles and briefly held while it is reloaded onto larger long-distance transport vehicles for shipment to landfills, Materials Recovery Facilities, or other treatment or disposal facilities.

According to the EPA:

"Waste transfer stations make solid waste collection more efficient and reduce overall transportation costs, air emissions, energy use, truck traffic, and road wear and tear."
